It takes approximately 80 old tires to create one square foot of rubber mulching. Despite being rubber, this substance is also non-flammable according to the requirements of the Federal Hazardous Substances Act. Compared to sand, rubber mulch has been found to remain cooler than sand by 20 degrees. Though the issue of toxicity of the rubber has been raised, it remains safe and non- toxic even if swallowed. It also provides an uninterrupted slope for surface drainage to provide a smooth playing surface, which is critical for player performance. Rubber mulch also doesn’t damage any sports equipment.
