Phil Mickelson won his first World Golf Championship – CA Championship at Doral in Florida. He won by a single shot over Nick Watney. Mickelson is now on the number 2 spot in the Official World Golf Ranking, leaping over Sergio Garcia. He may take over the number one spot before Tiger Woods is fully healthy and playing at his optimum best.

Watney and Mickelson went into the final day tied for the lead on -16 but it was Mickelson who eventually came out on top in a very close contest.

Mickelson has been sick all weekend, finally going to hospital Saturday night. He was treated for Dehydration and Heat Exhaustion.

“I haven’t eaten much in three days and I fought hard. I knew I was playing some of my best golf coming in here so I’m very excited to have finished it off.” He said. “I wasn’t really able to pay attention to some of the great shots that Nick hit because I was so worried about keeping my energy level high and steady throughout the round.”

Nick Watney put up a great fight through the final round and tied Mickelson for the lead when he pitched in from over the ninth green. An incredible shot, he had to fire the ball between a spectator stand and a TV tower.

On the 18th he made an incredible shot over the water, setting him him up for the hole. Nick was sitting one back and was unable to capitalize, finishing about two inches from the hole on his birdie attempt. He finished at -18.

“I can’t believe I left it short.” He said. “I’m pleased with the way I played though. Right now it still hurts to finish second; disappointing to come up one shot short. But overall it was a positive week.”
