Michael Jordan has been called “the greatest basketball player of all time†and Kobe is undoubtedly the best NBA player right now. Both NBA all star celebrities have the capability of controlling the game and can pull off jaw-dropping moves that leave everyone stunned. The two stars are not only comparable in terms of skill but even financially with Bryant on Forbes’ list with $45 M earnings tied with Michael Jordan. Clearly, they have much in common but the question is: Who is better? Has Kobe surpassed Jordan or does Jordan remain a legend? Let’s examine a few facts in form of comparison:
First, let’s talk about accomplishments:
- Jordan won six NBA championships in 15 years while Kobe is on his fourth in his 13 year career three of which were with Shaq’s help and only winning the recent NBA celebrity all star game last season alone.
- Jordan was a five time MVP while Kobe just got his first
- Jordan won Defensive Player of the year in 1988 while Bryant hasn’t never
- Jordan has 5 scoring titles and Kobe has only two
The MVP (Most Valuable Player) award is a reasonable way to rate a player’s ability and basically means the recipient is considered the most important and best player on the best NBA team. This would mean that five out of the six championships won by Jordan’s team were to his credit!
How about personal statistics:
- Jordan averaged fewer turnovers (2.7 vs. 2.9)
- Jordan averaged more assists (5.3 vs. 4.6)
- Jordan averaged more rebounds (6.2 vs. 5.3)
- Jordan averaged five more points per game (30.1 vs. 25.1)
- Jordan averaged more steals (2.3 vs. 1.5)
Is it fair to compare their stats when Kobe is still in the peak of his career and being retired, Jordan has played more games than Kobe? The difference is still comparable with Jordan playing 1072 regular season games and Kobe on his 948th and since the stats above are based on averages, Jordan clearly remains the NBA all star celebrity.
We can therefore conclude that the NBA’s statement on MJ’s biography that states: By acclamation, Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time” remains true. Nevertheless, though Kobe isn’t as good as Jordan, he’s the closest anyone can get.
