The famous author Led Zeppelin said: “Many dreams come true and some have silver linings, I live for my dreams and a pocket full of gold.” These words are proving true for 24 year old Portuguese soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo who signed the 80 million pound (€94 million; $131 million) deal with Real Madrid on July 6.  Regarding his childhood dream Ronaldo said “I’m very happy to be here. I’ve achieved one of my dreams….For me, I have made my childhood dream a reality, which was nothing less than playing for Real Madrid.” All the soccer drills paid off-a dream come true indeed!

The celebrity started out as a youth player when at 18 years old Manchester United’s manager Alex Ferguson saw his potential leading Cristiano to signing his £12.24 million contract in 2003 becoming the first Portuguese player. He has played for Manchester united since then helping them gain their first Premier League title in four years in 2007 and in March 2008 captained United for the first time in his career. With all their soccer drills, Manchester won the Cup World Cup and Ronaldo was awarded the Silver Ball.  The star is also a player in the Portuguese national team having scored around 18 goals by 22 and is considered one of the highest rated scorer stars in the world.

Real Madrid has had their eyes on the star since 2006 and in June 2008 Ronaldo had expressed interest to join the team if the ‘price was right’. Manchester United filed a tampering complaint but no further action was taken and he confirmed his stay with United. Four years to date 80,000 Real Madrid fans gave him a warm welcome at Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid surprising Ronaldo himself- “I didn’t expect a jam-packed stadium – this is truly impressive” he commented. Cristiano should be in for more
soccer drills but as President Florentino Perez said regarding Ronaldo’s fans: “They will ask of you the very best, but will also give you their all.”

Rubber Mulch-Key to athlete’s safety

photo taken from iowastatedaily.comWhat do sports fields, punching bags, Equestrian arena, playgrounds and MMA mats all have in common? What keeps athletes from getting very serious injuries? Usually made from recycled tires, rubber mulch has become one of athlete’s most important safety equipment but usually goes unnoticed. Its shock absorption quality which is better than wood, gravel and sand is the very thing that minimizes athletes’ injuries by breaking their falls and its resilient surface ensures an overall safe sport environment. Exactly how is this vital substance made?

It takes approximately 80 old tires to create one square foot of rubber mulching. After collecting the tires, the rubber needs to be made into a granular substance retaining its elastic and intuitive qualities, a process called devulcanization. This involves separating the tiny wires and fibers intertwined with the rubber and the mulch (rubber) which is the bulk of the whole process. Magnets are employed but aren’t 100% effective and chemicals need to be used. The rubber is then treated with heat, chemicals and softening agents to gain the elasticity and insulation required for the intended usage.

Soccer Player David Beckham-optimistic about transfer to Milan from Los Angeles

David Beckham expects the next coming week will be important to his possible transfer from Los Angeles Galaxy to AC Milan.

“I know that next week will be an important week,” Beckham said Sunday. “I want to remain with Milan, I’ve heard nothing from Galaxy, but when it’s like this you say it could be good news.”

The England midfielder has flourished in Serie A soccer since joining Milan on a 3 month loan that is to end on March 8. “The club wasn’t prepared to go above the US$3 million offer it had made,” Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani, said Saturday.

Beckham played ninety minutes in AC Milan’s 1-0 win over Cagliari on Sunday and was the team’s most creative player. He showed no signs of the injury that he picked up in the recent international with Spain, a match in which he won his 108th cap.

He is likely to line up for Milan against Werder Bremen in the UEFA Cup on Thursday. But he’s concerned that playing outside Europe could hurt his prospects competing for England under Coach Fabio Capello.

“It is obvious it could affect Capello’s consideration,” soccer player Beckham said. “I love playing football and I want to remain here.”
