22 year old WBA Light-Welterweight fighter Amir Khan is readying his MMA gloves for his scheduled fight against WBA light-welterweight champion Andreas Kotelnik on Saturday night. Khan shares the same trainer as the Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao. Damian ready for UFC Middleweight?
Top UFC middleweight contender, Damian Maia will be putting on his
MMA gloves again as he feels he is ready to take up current UFC middleweight champion title holder Anderson Silva nicknamed ‘The spider’. Talking to Fighters magazine he said:
“I see myself ready to fight for the belt. I would go at Anderson and it would give him the chance of knocking me out or give me the opportunity to finish the fight. That’s what I expect. I’m not saying I will win, but I will fight to end the fight before the judge’s decision. I want to do an aggressive fight and expose myself more. The UFC were waiting on the result of Anderson-Thales match to see what to do with me. They told me they were planning to give me the chance in August but because of their performance the UFC decided not put Silva in a main event very soon. Then they matched me and Nate Marquardt to find out the next challenger for the belt.”
Rubber Mulch-Key to athlete’s safety
What do sports fields, punching bags, Equestrian arena, playgrounds and MMA mats all have in common? What keeps athletes from getting very serious injuries? Usually made from recycled tires, rubber mulch has become one of athlete’s most important safety equipment but usually goes unnoticed. Its shock absorption quality which is better than wood, gravel and sand is the very thing that minimizes athletes’ injuries by breaking their falls and its resilient surface ensures an overall safe sport environment. Exactly how is this vital substance made?
It takes approximately 80 old tires to create one square foot of rubber mulching. After collecting the tires, the rubber needs to be made into a granular substance retaining its elastic and intuitive qualities, a process called devulcanization. This involves separating the tiny wires and fibers intertwined with the rubber and the mulch (rubber) which is the bulk of the whole process. Magnets are employed but aren’t 100% effective and chemicals need to be used. The rubber is then treated with heat, chemicals and softening agents to gain the elasticity and insulation required for the intended usage.

The Filipino boxing idol, Manny Pacquiao is now included in Forbes magazine as the world’s 6th highest paid athletes. In his latest matches against De La Hoya, Pacquiao got $10-million, while against Hatton it was $12-million and generated m
ore than $100 million in pay-per-view revenue in the US. He got a total of $30 million from these two victories which landed him the sixth place in the famous Forbes magazine with a $40 million earning in the past year. The sixth spot is shared with some NBA all star celebrities like Lebron James and golfer Phil Mickelson. Tiger Woods still keeps his title as the highest paid athlete with $110 million income in the past year!

MMA or Mixed Martial Arts, as its name suggests, is a combat sport where competitors use a hodgepodge of fighting disciplines. Hence, a karate champ can fight with a boxer; a judo artist can engage a kick-boxer; and so on.
UFC or the Ultimate Fighting Championship was the organization that brought mixed martial arts into the mainstream in 1993. However, MMA has longer roots than that.
MMA essentially began when the ancient Greeks integrated a brutal sport called pankration into the Olympic Games. Its matches uphold no particular fighting technique; combatants would even fight to the death for that matter.

Khan Beats Barrera in Round 5
Amir Khan won the fight against Barrera in the 5th round. No doubt that Khan showed great boxing skill in this fight. Khan’s footwork and fast punches made him dominate every round. Barrera had a hard time catching up with Khan’s speed that made Barrera had the disadvantage of the fight.
