Baseball
There are only a few games in the world that can be as infectious as baseball. The philosopher Morris Raphael Cohen once described baseball as a national religion. True enough, baseball is a unique American sport in a variety of ways.
Many people believe that baseball is the ultimate combination of skill, athleticism, timing, and strategy. Yogi Berra, a Hall of Fame baseball player, said that baseball was only ten percent physical. The rest was mental.
Consider the lure of the game – a conglomeration of pitch location, pitch sequence, statistics, ballparks, situational defense, history, and player personalities. Add to that the fact that the game has no time limit, and that it’s playing space, unlike other rigidly rectangular and standardized courts, extends theoretically to eternity from home plate to beyond its own fences. With such unlimited qualities, it is therefore important for the avid and not so avid fans to have a full appreciation of baseball through knowledge of the rules, and the keen observation of its endearing and enduring qualities.
